Habit
Large shrub or small tree, 8-12 (20) m tall, 5-10 m wide, usually short-stemmed, gnarled, often multi-stemmed, open, broad-rounded crown, fast-growing

Branches and bark
Initially smooth and reddish-brown, later flaking off in small scales
Blossom
Before leaves shoot, bright yellow-green panicles, in umbels, abundant nectar and pollen, heavily flown by bees, bumblebees and butterflies, late April to early May, shortly before A. platanoides
Leaves
Three- to five-lobed, deciduous, with a heart-shaped base, similar to Viburnum opulus, dark green above, light grey-green underneath, slightly hairy along the leaf veins, leaf margin irregularly notched, 12-14 cm, splendid yellow-orange to red-orange in autumn
Fruits
Nut fruit, on thick stems, in clusters, with pinkish-greenish later reddish-brown wings, natural regeneration
Roots
Intensive heart-root, high proportion of fine roots in the upper part of the soil
Demands
Sun to semi-shade, likes warmth, tolerates heat and drought, young shoots somewhat susceptible to frost, later sufficiently frost hardy

Moderately dry to fresh, nutrient-rich, neutral to alkaline loam and sandy soils, adaptable
