Avenue trees

Trees on both sides of the road!

With the onset of industrialisation, tree-lined avenues began to appear in cities. Some of these streets still exist in a number of European cities: Unter den Linden in Berlin, Königsallee in Düsseldorf, Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris and Leopoldstraße in Munich all date back to this era.

Avenues and wide streets become more attractive when lined with trees. These avenue trees offer several advantages, the most important being that they provide shade and filter fine dust.

Climate change means that temperatures in cities are continuing to rise, making shade and cooling essential for survival.

„My favourite species is Pinus! There is so much variety and excitement in the species and varieties that I am always surprised at what is going on."

Information about roadside trees

The GALK, or German Conference of Garden Directors, is an association of municipal green space administrations that supports the German Association of Cities (DST) in its tasks through the City Greenery Expert Commission. The Urban Trees Working Group launched the GALK street tree tests in Germany back in the late 1970s. These tests are designed to provide sound information on the suitability of certain tree species and varieties for use as street trees. The first street tree test was launched in 1994 and has been continued ever since with a steady stream of new species and varieties.

The advantages of avenue trees

As a result of global warming and land densification, the urban climate is warming particularly rapidly, but the shade provided by trees lining avenues reduces the direct heating of the road surface and the transpiring leaves cool the surrounding air.

In addition, trees on roadsides bind fine dust. They act like air conditioning—only natural.

Avenue trees are sustainable and improve the quality of life in urban areas, and are often the only way to expand urban green space.

Here you will find climate trees.
