Habit:
Small tree, up to 10 m tall, broadly extended crown, slow-growing, forming extensive root balls.
Flowers:
Dioecious, inconspicuous, yellowish to reddish, in short clusters of racemes directly on the stem and branches, summer to autumn
Fruits:
Pendent, flattened, brown-violet to dark brown carobs, 20 to 25 cm long, round, flat seeds, edible.
Leaves:
Evergreen, small, in pinnate pairs, leathery, succulent, obovate, shiny dark green, reddish shoots.
Bark:
Smooth, grey.
Demands:
Full sun, sheltered, temperate or cold house; tolerant of heat, drought and cutting.
Natural habitat:
Well drained, sandy, nutritious to poor soil, acidic to alkaline.
Note:
Not good in pots.
