Specifications:

Habit:
Petiole climber/trellis climber, depending on variety (1.5) 2-3 m or 3-4 (5) m tall, 1-2 m wide; support diameter 0.2-0.5 cm, medium to fast-growing, dense twigs and flowers only in upper third if not cut.
Flowers:
All varieties have large flowers, with six to eight sepals (transformed, colourful petals), usually flowers in summer, for colours see overview of varieties.
Leaves:
Some early shoots (March) April, usually pinnate, dark green.
Roots:
Fleshy, sensitive to injury and heat, put root base in shade.
Demands:
Sunny to semi-shady, sensitive to heat, moderately frost hardy, sensitive to late frost and wind.
Soil:
Fresh to moist, not drying out, slightly acidic to alkaline; nutritious, sandyhumic, sandy-loamy substrates, always well drained, not
growing well on heavy soil and withering quickly.
