Our Crataegus

One can only speculate about the number of thorn species; the number of species in the temperate zones varies between 200-1200 and cannot be made more specific. As the genus of thorns is constantly changing due to bastardisations, the first number is probably more realistic. Regardless of this, the species are very adaptable in foliage, habit, and various local situations. They are very robust plants that are not sensitive and are indispensable for countless animals in the biological cycle as sources of food and shelter.
