Wild variety Japan, China
Habit:
Picturesque, stocky small tree or large shrub, 2-3 m tall, 1.5-2 m wide, broad-pyramidal, compact, spherical crown, slow growing.
Leaves:
Evergreen, blue-green needles in winter, turning green in summer, up to 1 cm long, not prickly.
Flower:
Inconspicuous ears, February-March.
Fruit:
Thick conical cones, 1.5-3 cm.
Roots:
Flat-rooted.
Bark:
Thick bark, torn in strips, peeling off in fibres.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade, tolerates warmth, likes cool, humid areas, moderately frost hardy; acidic to slightly alkaline.
Soil:
Fresh to moist, humic, rather acidic to neutral, well-drained, loamy substrates.
Our tip:
Cryptomeria japonica 'Globosa' are susceptible to snow pressure, tie branches together in snowy areas. After transplanting, good care is required.
Note:
Winter protection recommended when temperatures go into extreme minus ranges.
