Small, upright tree or large shrub, 6-8 m tall and wide, long, upward-reaching branches, slow-growing.
Flower:
Splendid panicles on the ends of this year’s wood, white, pink, red or crimson, like phlox, with numerous petals, up to 20 cm long, summer to autumn.
Fruit:
Capsules.
Leaves:
Deciduous, opposite, elliptical-elongated to obovate, pointed, dark green, young bronze, up to 8 cm long.
Bark:
Peeling, grey-brown bark, smooth, pink to reddish underneath.
Demands:
Sun, moderately frost hardy, cold or tempered house, tolerates hard pruning.
Natural habitat:
Any moderately fertile, loamy, well drained soil.
Hardiness:
Zone 9
