Large shrub/small tree, 4-6 (7) m tall, 3-5 m wide, mature trees even wider, 20-30 cm annual growth; reddish twigs; wide, picturesque crown with age.
Flower:
White, long, upright racemes, 12-20 cm, June; ornamental.
Fruit:
Ovate drupes, dark purple coloured, poisonous.
Leaves:
Evergreen, oblong, ovate; curly/serrate margins; glossy dark green above, light green beneath, reddish brown petiole.
Roots:
Cordate, far-reaching lateral roots.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade; viticultural climate, sensitive to frost, strong ability to regenerate after frost damages, takes well to cutting.
Soil:
Slightly acidic to alkaline substrates, moderately dry to fresh; adaptable.
Note:
Leaves and fruits are poisonous.
