Habit:
A pretty, medium-size tree, usually only 15-20 m tall, rarely larger, 8-12 (15) m wide, initially wide upright, later round crown, picturesquely umbrella-shaped when old; branches rising, lower twigs loose arching, slow-growing.
Flower:
Green, inconspicuous, April, when leaves shoot.
Fruit:
Inconspicuous stone fruits, green.
Leaves:
Pointed-elliptical, pale dark green; autumn colours appearing late, yellow or a splendid brick-red, rarely crimson-red.
Stem:
Short, with thick protrusions, conspicuous smooth, grey bark, peeling like the sycamore in flat scales, thus with yellowish to orange-brown spots.
Roots:
Cordate, robust.
Demands:
Sun to light shade, likes warmth, usually frost hardy, occasionally sensitive to late frost; resistant to urban pollution, wind resistant.
Soil:
Moderately dry to fresh; acidic to alkaline, sandy loam to loam.
