Habit
Ornamental large shrub or small tree, 3-5 (10) m tall and wide; round crown, umbrella-shaped when old, branches and twigs reaching up like antlers, not overhanging; thicket-like colonies with runners; medium to strong-growing, 30-50 cm and more when young, after 10 years 10-15 cm

Usually dioecious, terminal panicles like candles, June to July, green
Leaves
Pinnate, 15-30 cm long, up to 50 cm on sprouts; pale, medium green, bluish green underneath; exciting autumn colours in September, yellow-orange to bright red
Fruits
Extraordinary, cob-shaped, carmine to red-brown, 20 cm long syncarpy, from August; persistent all winter
Roots
Shallow and far-reaching, forming runners to 8 m away, spreading without end when roots are damaged; sensitive to soil compaction

Sun, tolerates heat, frost hardy, not demanding, robust, good for urban areas, not wind resistant

Dry to moist, best when well drained, somewhat nutritious, slightly acidic to alkaline - also sterile substrates; short-lived and not growing well on heavy soil
