Characteristics:
Habit
A light-topped large tree, 20-25 (30) m tall, 4-6 (10) m wide; conical or cylindrical, older individuals have loose, asymmetrical habit, crown somewhat flattened; branches horizontal to ascending, usually to the ground; slow-growing, 20-20 (50) cm a year.

Leaves
Deciduous, like needles, light green, reddish brown to orange in autumn, end of November falling with short shoots; short shoots alternate.
Fruits
Inconspicuous, small, 2-3 cm long, brownish cones; not plentiful.
Roots
Shallow roots with deep roots; widely spread, forming vertical respiratory roots in damp substrates, conical knee-like growths up to 1 m tall rising from the shallow root system; these 'knees' are hollow inside, and sawing them off does not harm the tree. These root growths serve to anchor the tree on unstable soil, as the respiratory roots drive down into the soil like tap-roots.
Demands
Sun, likes warmth, moderately frost hardy; good for urban areas, extremely wind resistant.
Soil
Moderately dry to damp, tolerating long floods; acidic to neutral, avoid chalky soil; on all sandy to sandy-loamy substrates; clay also possible if no frost damage is probable.
