Characteristics:
Habit
Medium to large shrub, also small tree in favourable areas, 1.5-2.5 m tall, up to 5 m tall in wine-growing areas; 1.5-2.5 (4) m wide; with loose, open, umbrella-shaped crown when old, often with several stems, slow-growing
Blossom
White, 3 cm long, in loose, umbel-like inflorescences with greenish-reddish perianth; from end of July, beginning of August to September; with exotic, far-reaching vanilla-like fragrance
Leaves
Large, elliptical to cordate, pointed; crimson when shooting, later dark green; pungent when pressed; falling off after first frost without autumn colours
Fruits
They are unpalatable
Roots
Fleshy, far-reaching; tends to form runners; sensitive to work around the roots
Demands
Full sun to shade; tolerant of heat, needs warmth, not very frost hardy, needs protection
Soil
Moderately dry to fresh; neutral to moderately alkaline, always well drained substrates, not too nutritious as the shoots otherwise do not ripen well in autumn.
