Characteristics:
Habit
Exceptional flowering shrub or small tree, 4-7 m tall and 3-4 m wide; upright when young, later broad to horizontal, but asymmetrical crown; slow to moderate growing; very individual
Blossom
Cream-white, pointed bracts, true flowers inconspicuous, after leaves shoot, June; flowers on upright stems borne above the foliage; flowers last some four to six weeks, gradually turning pink; flowers some four weeks later than C. florida, some three weeks later than C. florida rubra
Leaves
Ovoid, dark green, brilliant autumn colours, scarlet or orange-crimson, very persistent, from October
Fruits
Pink to red, like raspberries, from September, tasteless (edible)
Roots
Cordate roots, not far-reaching, sensitive to soil compaction
Demands
Sun to semi-shade, more robust than C. florida; tolerates more warmth and drought, not as sensitive to later frost; somewhat protected from wind
Soil
Good on fresh, sandy-humic or sandy-loamy soil, acidic to neutral; good on heavy soil, but slow-growing
Note
Small specimen not flowering in the first few years or only a little, later regularly and in profusion; larger specimens flower soon after planting
