Sun to partial shade; heat-tolerant, frost-hardy; tolerates more drought than C. laevigata; tolerates urban climates, extremely wind-resistant

Dry to fresh; on all nutrient-rich, neutral to calcareous substrates; fails on nutrient-poor, dry substrates; sensitive to salt
