Habit
Small shrub, usually 1.5 m tall and wide, in favourable areas up to 2.5 m; dense branching, arching; moderately fast-growing
Blossom
Small stars or tubes on long panicles, pink to white; profuse and persistent in favourable areas, June or July into September; slight, pungent smell
Leaves
Evergreen, only semi-evergreen in unfavourable areas; ovoid, reverse ovoid, small, like the common box, coarse leathery, shiny dark green
Fruits
Brownish, inconspicuous capsules, rare in these parts
Demands
Full sun to light shade, protect from winter sun, likes it warm or cool; not very frost hardy; benefits from protection and covering with mulch or fleece; likes high humidity, wind resistant, tolerates salty air very well
Soil
Moderately dry to moist; acidic to slightly alkaline, not bound to acidic soil; moderately tolerant of salt.
