Habit
Small shrub, 0.5-1.5 m, rarely up to 2 m tall and wide; dense-upright to arching; moderately growing
Blossom
Small, funnel-shaped, in pairs, yellowish white, April to May; slightly fragrant

Elliptical, ovoid, early shoots at beginning of April, conspicuous light green, later dark green, bluish green underneath, pale yellow-green in autumn
Fruits
Elongated, ovoid or round double berries; black and blue glaucous; not poisonous, but edible, though they taste sweetish/bitter and are slimy

Shallow roots, resistant to root pressure from large trees

Shady; likes cool areas, frost hardy; likes high to extremely high humidity
