Habit
Asymmetrical, conical, medium-sized tree, 12-15 (20) m tall and 6-10 m wide, initially fast-growing, 60-90 cm a year, but then slowing down, with the crown flattening

Only full sunlight, avoids shade; tolerates heat, extremely frost hardy; wind resistant, tolerates urban climates

Dry to moist; very acidic to slightly acidic, withering on alkaline soil; only well drained soil, humic or loamy sand, dying on loam or even clay; good on non-nutritious soil that would not be suitable for other trees; moderately tolerant of salt
