Characteristics:

Habit

Medium-sized tree, 6-10 (15) m tall, 3-6 m wide; a slender, extended conical habit when young, gradually becoming wider, presenting itself as a closed, clearly distinct cone with branches to the ground until it is old; branches initially slenderly upright, later extended and arching upright, lower branches lilting; medium-growing in the first few years, 20-40 cm; after ca. 15 years clearly slower at 10-15 cm a year; does not grow nearly as slowly as is often claimed

Branches and bark

Stem stays shiny and smooth when young, with thin strips when older, grey-black; twigs chequered like snake skin

Blossom

Male flowers in clusters, golden yellow; at the base of May shoots

Leaves

Needles in twos, 5-8 cm long (half as long as those of P. nigra), dark green, shiny, only twig tips bent, in clusters at the end of shoots

Fruits

Conical, dark to light brown, decorative cones up to 7.5 cm long

Roots

Deep roots, extremely adaptable, also dealing with little soil volume

Demands

Full sun, takes well to heat and drought, frost hardy, does not need wind protection, good for urban environments

Soil

Dry and fresh once settled in; sensitive to dampness; neutral to very alkaline soil (tolerating up to pH 8.4); on all well drained substrates, even loam.

Tip

Pinus leucodermis is even more robust than Pinus nigra. The plant is much more suitable for small areas due to its slow growth
