Loose large tree, (15) 20-30 m tall, 6-10 m wide, old specimen sometimes reaching 20 m width; conical when young, soon becoming asymmetrically cylindrical; branches horizontal in layers, twigs supple, very thin; medium-growing to strong-growing, 30-60 cm a year

Completely smooth for a long time, flat lengthways fissures when old; impressive crowns can be trained, if begun early
Leaves
Needles in fives; soft, blue-green, thin, often yellow-green in winter; only borne for 2-3 years, like paint brushes at the ends of twigs

Up to 20 cm long, slender, cylindrical, light brown cones, usually resinous

Far-reaching, shallow to moderately deep; sensitive to soil compaction
Demands
Sun to light shade, sensitive to heat, frost hardy; prefers cool-humid areas; very sensitive to air pollution, avoids urban areas, tolerates wind

Moderately dry to moist; very acidic to neutral, chlorotic on alkaline soil; good on well drained, poor or nutritious soil
