Our Tsuga
The Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is an impressive and robust conifer from North America that is characterised by its pyramidal and symmetrical growth form. With horizontal to overhanging branches, this tree can grow up to 20 metres high and 8 metres wide in our latitudes, while in its natural habitat it can reach heights of up to 60 metres and an impressive age of over 800 years. The striking red bark forms an attractive contrast to the shiny, dark green needles with white stripes on the underside. Tsuga canadensis prefers cool, moist and sheltered locations that are protected from cold winds and frost, and thrives in both sunny and semi-shady places.
The Canadian hemlock is characterised above all by its versatile use, whether as a solitary tree, in groups or as a hedge. It has a loosely structured, broadly conical crown, which is often multi-stemmed and branched to the ground. With a medium growth rate and decorative small cones, it is a real eye-catcher in any garden. This tree prefers nutrient-rich, fresh to moist and well-drained soil and is sensitive to drought and soil compaction. It feels particularly at home in cool, humid locations and is frost-hardy, but sensitive to urban climates. Tsuga canadensis is also one of the most pruning-tolerant conifers, making it easy to prune into shape.
