Characteristics:

Habit

Medium-sized, picturesque tree; 12-15 m tall, 6-10 m wide; domed, light crown, loose when old, oval, stem usually as leader, somewhat asymmetrically bent, main branches diagonally to stiffly upright, lateral twigs hanging, slightly swaying; fast-growing, initially 50-80 cm a year, later 30-50, no upward growth after the first 20 years

Smooth, shimmering, grey-white bark, with flat lengthways grooves after some 20 years

Inconspicuous catkins and fruits

Leaves

Very early shoots, (end of March) beginning of April, bright light green, thin diamond-shaped, ovoid leaves, slightly fragrant, occasionally sensitive to late frost; leaves are leathery in summer, glossy on top, medium to dark green, whitish or dull bluish underneath, clearly two-toned; a modest pale yellow at the beginning of October

Roots

Shallow, at the surface some 2 m from the stem, thus leave root base open lest pavements be lifted; no runners

Demands

Full sun, crooked when in shade; tolerates heat, sensitive to late frost, but frost hardy; tolerant of urban pollution, not wind sensitive when old

Soil

Moderately dry to moist, tolerates short floods, but not stagnant water; likes chalk, sand and loess/loam, the poorer and drier, the more short-lived, then already showing dying symptoms after some 25 years

Tips

A short-lived tree under inner-city conditions, some 40-50 years, thus provide for replacements in time; nonetheless indispensable as the first green city tree in spring
