Characteristics:

Habit

Thicket-like, upright shrub, 1-3 (4) m tall and wide, covering large areas with runners; thorny, extended twigs; slow-growing

Blossom

Before leaves shoot in April (May), the whole shrub is a white cloud of flowers consisting of countless small individual flowers; fragrant

Leaves

Varying, small, broadly lanceolate to elliptical, dark green; pale yellow or (rarely) yellow-orange in October

Fruits

Black, glaucous blue, cherry-size stone fruits, edible after frost; pungent, tart taste

Roots

Shallow and far-reaching; tough root mesh, runners up to 10 m away; tolerate covering, sensitive to floods
