Picturesque, large tree with many stems, 15-20 (25) m tall, (8) 10-15 m with one stem, with several stems up to 25 m wide; stems and branches arching upwards, twigs horizontal; fast-growing, 40-60 cm a year

Inconspicuous; conspicuous yellow-green 20-40 cm long catkins with two-winged nuts, lined up like pearls on a string
Leaves
Large, 30-50 cm long, ash-like, pinnate leaves; sensitive to late frost, early shoots; dark green, spectacular golden green to golden yellow autumn colours in November
Roots
Extended far out and shallow, forming runners up to 10 m away; lifting pavements and curbs up to 2 m away; tolerates floods
Demands
Sun; tolerates heat, usually frost hardy, resistant to urban pollution; wind resistant
Soil
Moderately dry to damp; tolerating droughts once established, acidic to alkaline, good on nutritious, somewhat heavy, mineral substrates
Tips
Do not cut in spring as it bleeds a lot then; only cut in summer or autumn
