Habit:
Medium-size tree or shrub, 3-15 m tall; (5) 8-12 m wide; broadly conical or ovoid to roand, moderately growing, 25-40 cm a year; some solitaries have lower branches that hang down low.
Flowers:
Yellow-green panicles during the shoot, May, rather inconspicuous.
Fruits:
Nutlets with horizontal fruit wings, brown.
Leaves:
Usually five-lobed; dark green, autumn colours in October, bright yellow, seldom orange.
Root:
Intense cordate roots; not sensitive, slow-growing.
Demands:
Very adaptable, almost anywhere; avoids dark shade; good for urban areas, very wind resistant.
Soil:
Avoid damp, very acidic or clay soil; tolerates salt somewhat.
Note:
Takes very well to cutting, suitable for hedge walls and topiary.
