Habit:
Round-crown large tree 20-25 (30) m tall, 15-20 m wide; short stem orseveral stems with many equally large branches reaching upwards, usually funnel-shaped; lateral twigs loosely overhanging, down to the groand when free-standing; fast-growing maple, 80-120 cm the first 10-20 years, later 20-40 cm.

Brownish to reddish clusters, before leaves shoot in March.

Leaves:
Shoots bronze-green; leaves five-lobed, fresh green on top, whitish anderneath, pale yellow in autumn.
Roots:
Extreme shallow roots with far-reaching root close to the surface, lifts pavements if too crowded, thus leave 2-3 m, base should be open;
easy to transplant and grows well even when large; tolerates floods.
Demands:
Full sun or light shade, frost hardy; good for urban areas; needs wind protection.
Soil:
Slightly acidic or neutral, fresh to moist, nutritious soil preferred, but very adaptable, thus also on poor and moderately dry substrates, yellow-green leaves when chalk is too plentiful.
Note:
Never cut in late winter or spring as it has many flowers.
