Habit:
Usually a large tree, 8-22 (30) m tall, 6-8 m wide; occasionally smaller, asymmetrical; light, highly domed crown with loosely overhanging twigs; fastgrowing in the first 20-25 years, 40-60 (80) cm a year, then only growing slightly.
Flowers:
Monoecious, yellowish catkins, before leaves shoot, April to May.
Fruits:
Inconspicuous, seeds slightly opening.
Bark:
White with black grooves; bark always black when injuries heal.
Leaves:
Pointed, triangular or diamond-shaped; light green, somewhat fragrant shoots at the beginning
of May, later medium-green; bright yellow in October.
Roots:
IIntense, dense and very shallow , main roots directly ander the surface; extremely sensitive to soil compaction, filling in, and paving
over.
Demands:
Hungry for light, growing crooked in shade; avoids heat, very frost hardy, average wind resistance.
Soil:
Not demanding at all, adaptable, sensitive to salt.
Note:
Prefers planting in spring.
