Habit:
Funnel-shaped shrub, 1.5-2 (3) m tall, 1-1.5 (2) m wide, twigs stiffly upright; slow-growing.
Flower:
Splendid, large flowers like hollyhock, wide open like bells, plentiful and persistent, depending on variety from end of June to September, in rainy areas only single-flower varieties, double in wine-growing regions; for colours see overview of varieties.
Fruit:
Inconspicuous light brown capsules.
Leaves:
Pointed-ovoid and three-lobed, medium-green, later shoots; pale in autumn.
Roots:
Cordate with fleshy roots; not well anchored, loosening when exposed to wind; cover young plants with mulch in the first years as they are sensitive to the cold.
Demands:
Full sun, weaker in the shade; needs warmth; sensitive to frost, becoming hardier as it grows; well drained soil is important, heavy, loamy or clay substrates increases frost damage; needs wind protection, tolerant of urban pollution.
Soil:
Moderately dry to fresh; slightly acidic to alkaline; does not tolerate long droughts.
Note:
Thin out after frost damage in spring; cutting back to ca. 5 buds produces strong shoots with somewhat fewer, but larger flowers.
