Habit:
Broad, upright growing, hemispheric, flowering shrub, 1.5-2 m tall and wide, branches arching under the weight of the flowers, slow-growing.
Flowers:
Mop-headed or lacecap, large flowers, colours depending on variety and soil pH, blue, white, rose, July to August (September), pruning from mid-June to mid-July promotes bud formation.
Leaves:
Deciduous, succulent, ovate, medium green, no autumn colour.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade, demands wind protection, moderately frost hardy depending on variety, root ball should not dry out, no waterlogging.
Soil:
Fresh to moist, deep, rich in humus, slightly acidic, nutritious substrates; tolerates alkaline habitats, this may have an effect on flower colour.
Note:
Only frozen or dense growing shoots should be pruned as flowers are developed on last season’s wood. The varieties are partly assigned
to H. macrophylla, partly to H. serrata.
Tip:
Soil pH is decisive for flower colour. Maintaining blue flowers demands free aluminium ions with a soil pH between 4.0 and .5; white and red hortensias keep their flowers independant of soil pH.
