Picea - Spruce
Pinaceae
Our Picea
The 60 species of the genus Picea, primarily indigenous to the large forests in the northern hemisphere, all develop into more or less pointed, conical trees
with clearly distinct layers of whorling branches. Thanks to the large number of
cultivars, this uniformity has become more varied in colour and habit. The cultivars offer an especially exciting variety in size, various habits and foliage.
All spruces have rigid, usually quadrangular, some even as pointy, prickly needles. The monoecious flowers usually appear every 3-4 years or so, with the pollen of the yellow flower clusters covering moist plant parts like coating of sulphur; the female red flowers display their future form as cones in miniature.
Normally, they develop fully only when the tree is old, though some decorative varieties are attractive exceptions with cones in many shades of brown even when the tree is quite young.
The cones hang from the branches, unlike fir cones. The
root system of the spruces is flat and far-reaching, tolerating
no underplanting, but itself very sensitive to all kinds of
invasion.
