Central to Southern Europe
Habit:
Decorative large tree, 20-25 (40) m tall, 6-10 (12) m wide; broadly conical or ovoid in the first years with symmetrically arranged layers of twigs, branches to the ground for ca. 15 years, crown then widening, umbrella-shaped or asymmetrical, no branches in the lower region; strong-growing when young, 40-60 cm a year, later after 15 years only 15-25 cm.
Bark:
Thick bark in yellow and dark brown with blackish fissures.
Fruit:
Conical, 5-9 cm long, brown cones.
Leaves:
Needles in twos, 8-15 cm long, dark green, coarse, pointed and slightly prickly.
Roots:
Well anchored deep roots, adaptable.
Demands:
Full sunlight, completely intolerant of shade, resistant to heat, frost hardy; adaptable; resistant to urban environments, tolerates salty air, wind resistant.
Soil:
Dry to fresh; resistant to drought when established; sensitive to dampness; slightly acidic to very alkaline (more than pH 8.4); on all well drained, chalky substrates, even loam.
