Habit:

Picturesque large tree with a varying habit, 10-30 m tall, 5-8 (10) m wide; conical when young, gradually with more extended branches; crown is loosely asymmetrical or umbrella-shaped; stem like main branches seldom perfectly straight, usually slightly bent or twisted; medium-growing, 20-40 cm a year.

Bark:

Orange in the upper crown, flat; at the base of the stem, lengthways fissures in various hues of brown and grey.

Flower:

Light yellow male flowers, May.

Früchte:

Small, grey-brown cones, 2.5-7 cm long.

Leaves:

Needles in twos, blue or blue-green, more yellowish grey in winter; normally loses its older needles after being transplanted, but regenerates well.

Roots:

Tolerant, deep roots, adaptable, resistant to being covered by loose material; flat roots on heavy or damp soil, where it needs support; tolerates short floods.

Demands:

Sun, tolerates heat, frost hardy; good for urban areas, sensitive to air pollution, does not need wind protection.

Soil:

Dry to damp; on all substrates, not growing in clay.

Ideal for underplanting with perennials or shrubs of all kinds as it only casts light shadows and is tolerant of neighbours.
