Origin:
South-Eastern Europe, West Asia.
Habit:
Normal to large shrub, 2-4 (6) m tall and wide, domed with upwardreaching or extended twigs, slow-growing.
Flower:
White, upright racemes, May to June, pungent scent; occasional second blossoms in autumn.
Fruit:
Black, tart cherries.
Leaves:
Evergreen, thick and leathery, slender to broadly elliptical.
Demands:
Sun to shade, tolerates heat if not too dry; somewhat frost hardy to sensitive; tolerant of urban pollution and wind.
Soil:
Moderately dry to moist, slightly acidic to alkaline; in any somewhat nutritious garden soil that is not too heavy.
Note:
An indispensable evergreen shrub in temperate zones; in cold regions, all varieties are sensitive to frost, but when the location is well chosen - protection from winter sun and easterly winds - it also grows well; regenerates well; tolerates cutting.
