Origin:
Central Europe.
Habit:
Ovoid to round large shrub/ small tree, 3-10 (15) m tall, 4-8 m wide; main branches reaching upwards; lateral twigs horizontal to overhanging; initially fast-growing, 60-80 cm a year, later slow, 10-20 cm.
Flower:
When leaves shoot in pretty, lilting, white racemes, April to May; intense scent of bitter almonds.
Fruit:
Pea-size, black cherries, bitter.
Leaves:
Very early shoots, April; elliptical, fresh green, fragrant; later pale green, bluish underneath; colour turns to yellow or brick-red in autumn.
Roots:
Flat and intense, forming runners up to 10 m away; tolerates floods, sensitive to soil compaction.
Bark:
Black-grey, a bitter smell comes out when the bark is damaged.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade; tolerates warmth, but prefers cool sites; frost-hardy; some varieties are c onsidered as good avenue trees.
Soil:
Moist to fresh, slightly acidic to neutral, does not tolerate chalky soils; deep, nutrient-rich, sandy-gravelly to loamy-clayey.
