Origin:
Species is unknown in the wild; it was cultivated in Japan for a long time.
Habit:
Usually a small tree, rarely a large shrub, usually 3-5 m tall and wide, branches rising, twigs arching to draping.
Flower:
Buds dark red or carmine, turning light pink or white when opening; end of March to mid-April.
Fruit:
Rare; small, black cherries.
Leaves:
Elliptical, pointed; yellow-orange in autumn.
Demands:
Full sun, likes warmth, usually frost hardy; tolerates urban pollution; plant wind protected due to the flowers.
Soil:
Fresh to moist, neutral to alkaline; nutrient-rich sandy-loamy substrates; on cold, heavy and wet soils (dense loam/clay) it soon loses its characteristic growth habit.
