Habit:
Large shrub with many stems or small tree, 6-12 m or even 15 m tall; 4-8 m wide; wide and loose conical or round crown, stem often only short, branches upright; slow-growing; 25-40 cm a year.
Flower:
Large white cymes, after leaves shoot in May, pungent smell.
Fruit:
Round fruits, orange-scarlet from September, mealy fruit edible, but tasteless.
Leaves:
Broadly ovoid, coarse and leathery, shoots white tomentose, later dark green on top, white or grey woolly underneath, autumn colours yellow or falling grey-green, October.
Stem:
Smooth bark for a long time, black grey, later with grooves.
Roots:
Extremely deep, robust.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade, tolerates heat, likes warmth, frost hardy; good for urban areas; wind resistant.
Soil:
Dry to fresh, sensitive to dampness, slightly acidic to very alkaline, in all loose, well drained substrates, best with chalk.
