Habit:
Attractive small tree or mediumsize tree, 5-10 (15) m tall, one or more stems, 4-6 m wide; initially ovoid, later loose round crown; main branches ascending, twigs horizontal to arching upright; the first 10-15 years fastgrowing, 50-80 cm a year, then noticeably slower, 20-30 cm.
Flower:
White corymbs, short after leaves shoot, end of May to June; unpleasant smell, insect pasture.
Fruit:
Pea-size, like berries, orange-red or red, from August; sour bitter, useful.
Leaves:
Pinnate, dull medium green; bluish underneath, autumn colours strongyellow- orange or brick-red, October.
Roots:
Shallow to cordate, intense roots, sensitive to soil compaction and paving, covering tolerated.
Demands:
Sun to shade; tolerates warmth, forming runners, but sensitive to heat; prefers cool and moist areas, frost hardy; wind resistant.
Soil:
Moderately dry to moist, sensitive to severe, long droughts; on all substrates; dies quickly on chalky soil; sensitive to salt.
