Origin:
Wild variety Central and North China.
Habit:
Large lilac shrub, height/width 3-4 m, upright, dense and bushy, fast-growing.
Flower:
Large, loose and slim upright panicles with slim tubular single blooms, buds intensively dark red to purple according to variety, colour of opened flower lilac; flowering end of May, with a significant margin to other garden lilacs; far-reaching scent.
Leaves:
Elliptic, pale green; insignificant autumn colours.
Demands:
Sun, likes warmth; very frost-hardy, tolerates urban pollution.
Soil:
Fresh to moist grounds, acidic to neutral, suitable for all permeable and nutritious garden soils; not growing well in heavy soils.
Note:
S. prestoniae originated in Canada around 1920 from crosses between the bow lilac (Syringa reflexa) and the shaggy lilac (Syringa villosa), which is hardly known in this country.
