Habit:
A splendid, large tree of varying size, (15) 20-30 m tall, 10-15 (20) m wide; crown starts low down, initially conical, later domed, rarely purely round crown; main branches diagonal to stiffly upright; twigs arching, clearly overhanging in the lower crown region; medium to strong-growing, in the first 10-20 years 30-50 cm a year, then only 10-20 cm.
Flower:
Yellow cymes, July; pleasant and far-reaching fragrance; one of the few indigenous summer-flowering trees, insect friendly.
Fruit:
Oval to globular nutlets, felt-like hairy.
Leaves:
Cordate, pale green on top, bluish underneath, in October green-yellow or deep golden yellow.
Roots:
Intense, cordate, sensitive to paving, soil compaction and filling in.
Demands:
Sun to semi-shade; tolerates heat, likes warmth, frost hardy; moderately good for urban areas, wind resistant.
Soil:
Moderately dry to fresh, sensitive to heat and drought; on all slightly acidic to alkaline substrates, nutritious, loamy; very sensitive to salt.
Note:
Tolerates cutting into old wood, suitable for tall cut hedges; cut in July or August. Aphids prefer Tilia platyphyllos, lime trees can be transplanted very well. Small-leaved limes can live up to 1000 years.
