Habit
A stately tree, up to 20-25 (40) m tall, up to 25 m wide, initially broadly conical crown later loosely round-crowned, short main trunk in a single stand, main branches ascending, twigs slightly upright to horizontal, overhanging in the lower parts of the crown, slow growing

Blossom
At time of leaf sprouting, monoecious, separate sex, hanging catkins, yellow-green, 5-10 cm, May/early June, female flowers smaller and red in leaf axils
Leaves
Reddish shoots, very variable, obovate to elliptic, deeply indented, fresh green to grey-green, light green underneath, almost white-green, up to 15 cm long, conspicuous autumn colouring purple-red to brown-purple, foliage partly adhering through the winter, similar to Q. robur

Deep taproot, intensive lateral root system close to the surface
Demands
Sun to light shade, short dry periods are tolerated, sensitive to flooding and soil compaction, site tolerant, tolerant of road salt, frost hardy, resistant to industry, climate change tree
Soil
On all fresh, deep, well-drained, slightly acidic, preferably sandy-loamy substrates
Note
Rarely found in Europe, in the USA state tree in 3 states; wood is used by the furniture industry and for barrel production (barrique)
