Medium to large tree, 12 to 25 m tall, up to 10 m wide, semi-open ovoid crown, twigs spreading sideways, grows very slowly

Grey-brown bark flaking off in elongated strips on older specimens, inner bark grey-greenish, dark, cracked bark when old

Summer green, irregularly serrated, up to 15 cm long, leathery, glossy dark green on top, dense pubescence underneath, silvery white, bright yellow, orange to dark red in autumn in sunny areas, otherwise golden yellow

Oval acorns, mostly in pairs, up to 2.5 cm, one third surrounded by the cupule

Heart root system, with deep taproot

Sun to light shade, likes warmth, somewhat frost hardy, frost protection recommended when young, very wind resistant, tolerates wetness and flooding, climate change tree

Wide range of habitats, moderately dry to moist, acidic to slightly alkaline, avoids high lime content, prefers nutritious, well-drained sandy loam soils, clayey soils still possible
