Habit
Large shrub or even a picturesque small tree, 3-6 m tall and wide, often wider than tall; short, crooked and twisted stems, branches crooked, bent; slightly domed crown; fast-growing, 50-100 cm a year

Blossom
Usually dioecious in upright panicles; yellowish green, from the end of June to July
Leaves
Pinnate, conspicuous large, 25-45 cm long, up to 25 leaflets, late shoots from middle  to end of May, light green, in summer dark green and glossy; autumn colours bright orange to flaming red from end of September, beginning of October
Fruits
Conical syncarpy at the ends of twigs, reddish brown from beginning of September, persistent all winter into March, not poisonous like other species Rhus
Roots
Far-reaching, shallow root system, forming runners; sensitive to all paving, covering or flooding
Demands
Only full sun, extremely sensitive to shade; tolerates heat, likes warmth, frost hardy; tolerates dry air very well; resistant to urban pollution; good for industrial areas
Soil
Extremely dry to moist; slightly acidic to very alkaline; any gravely or sandy loam, also poor; withering on heavy soil; resistant to salt
