Characteristics:
Habit
Thicket-like small-shrub, can climb through other plants, 0.5-1.5 m tall, single twigs up to more than 2 m long; prostrate, asymmetrically extended to overhanging; fast-growing and quite varying
Blossom
Corymbs with few flowers, white; May to September, with flowers and fruits at the same time in summer
Leaves
In threes, early shoots in April, light green, later pale green to grey-green; many autumn colours, bright red or orange-yellow, early, from beginning of September
Fruits
Glaucous blue dewberries, later only black; edible, but  tasteless and without aroma
Roots
Deep with far-reaching root system, extraordinarily tough roots, but avoids root pressure from large trees
Demands
Sun to shade; warm to cool, frost hardy; prefers high humidity
Soil
Moderately dry to damp; slightly acidic to alkaline; likes nutritious, heavy soil such as mud, loam or clay
