A bizarre large shrub or small tree, 4-8 (12) m tall, 4-6 m wide; ovoid crown, (30 years) umbrella-shaped and scraggly when old; branches ascending and twisted into spirals, twigs very crooked, like corkscrews; fast-growing, initially 50-80 cm, later 30 cm a year; a splendid sight
