Habit
A massive tree, 25-35 m tall, the largest specimen in Europe being 48 m tall, 10-12 m wide; conical with a straight leader, the base of the stem broadening; branches arching down with ascending twig tips, usually with branches to the ground; almost not growing when young, gradually medium-growing to strong-growing, 30-60 (70) cm a year

Sun to light shade, tolerating semi-shade when young, likes warmth or moderately cool, usually frost hardy; all the needles turn brown after harsh frost, but the tree usually regenerates in the following year; wind resistant

Fresh to moist, sensitive to drought; acidic to alkaline; nutritious, sandy, gravelly or loamy-humic; often very sensitive to frost on heavy soil and not long-lived
