Habit
Large shrub or small tree, 6-10 (12) m tall, 4-6 m wide, up to 10 m wide with several stems; upright, broadly conical or open round crown; normal growth, 30-45 cm a year

Blossom
Like umbels, 8-15 cm large, loose inflorescences, individual flowers larger than 1 cm, white, after leaves shoot end of May to beginning of June, pungent smell; flowers some 10 days later than S. americana
Leaves
Pinnate, leaflets elongated-elliptical, pale green; remarkable autumn colours in yellow, red, orange and crimson hues from end of September to October
Fruits
Round, almost cherry-size berries in broad fruit umbels, orange-red to scarlet from mid-August to October; thick and meaty, edible and useful
Roots
Intense, shallow roots, sensitive to covering and soil compaction; resistant to floods
Demands
Sun to shady, in shade neither flowering nor with conspicuous autumn colours; sensitive to heat and drought, likes cool, humid areas, frost hardy; sensitive to air and soil pollution, needs wind protection

Fresh to sometimes flooded; moderately acidic to slightly alkaline, avoid chalk, otherwise any garden soil; sensitive to salt
