Habit

A strong twiner, 6-8 m tall, often more; very fast-growing; 1-3 m long a year, with fast lateral growth, pulling and pushing unstable supports and anchors out

Blossom

20-50 cm long, hanging, loose racemes, violet-blue; while leaves shoot from mid-May to June; pleasantly fragrant

Leaves

Pinnate, elongated-elliptical leaflets, reddish green during shooting, later fresh green; yellow autumn colours

Fruits

Like oversized beans, velvety green, poisonous

Roots

Flatly spreading, very sensitive to floods, soil compaction and paving and mechanical injuries

Demands

Only full sun, tolerates heat, needs warmth, usually frost hardy, but sensitive to late frost; resistant to urban pollution

Moderately dry to moist; acidic to slightly alkaline, chlorotic with high chalk content; any well drained, sandy-humic or sandy-loamy substrates; not growing well in heavy soil
