Habit

A conspicuous, small to medium-size tree, 8-10 (15) m tall, 6-8 m wide, pyramidal, later broadly rounded crown, branches irregularly funnel-shaped, 25-30 cm a year

Impressive, 15-30 cm large panicles, bell-like single flower yellow and purple, summer bloomer, July to August, insect grazer, lots of nectar

Summer green, late shoots, dark reddish-brown, turning green over the summer, dark green, heart-shaped, bright golden yellow in autumn, from September onwards

Fruits

15-40 cm long, bean-like fruit capsules, hanging down, brown, some sticking until spring

Demands

Sun to light shade; tolerates heat very well in fresh soil; usually frost-hardy, favourable for wind- and frost-protected sites; tolerates urban climates

Moderately dry to moist, nutrient-rich, deep loamy substrates, slightly acidic to alkaline, relatively undemanding

Tips

Dryer sites result in better maturation of the shoots
