Full sun, likes warmth, hardly frost hardy which is no problem as the plant flowers on year-old wood and would have to be cut back in early spring; protected areas are favourable

Tip
Even though Clematis fans exclaim, 'Such an exquisite shrub can afford to be demanding', it suffices to cover the root base with some 5-8 cm of bark mulch to get the plant through winter.
