Characteristics:

Habit

Large shrub or small tree, 4-6 m tall and wide; often with short main stem or multi stem, asymmetrical crown, upright with extended layers of twigs; initially slow-growing, 10-20 cm a year, then medium-growing, 40-50 cm

Blossom

Cream-white umbels after leaves shoot, end of May to beginning of June, very pungent

Leaves

Elliptical, medium-green, whitish green underneath, persistent autumn colours from September to October from dull violet-crimson to red and orange-yellow

Fruits

Bluish black berries in August, not persistent

Roots

Shallow, far-reaching, sensitive to soil compaction; especially sensitive to drying out, thus always in shade

Demands

Light shade, sun possible if soil is moist; frost hardy, thrives best in cool, humid areas; avoids heat and drought

Fresh to moist, acidic, sandy-humic soil, well drained
