Characteristics:

Habit

Conical large tree with loose, open crown when old, 20-25 m tall, occasionally taller, 6-10 m wide, branches horizontal, lateral twigs hanging; strong-growing.

Leaves

Sharply pointed, penetratingly prickly needles, yellowish green on top with two conspicuous white wax stripes underneath; needles are flat and radially arranged around the twig.

Fruits

Cones light brown, up to 10 cm long

Roots

Shallow, far-reaching, tolerates floods well but sensitive to soil compaction.

Demands

Sun to semi-shade, avoids warmth, prefers a temperate coastal climate; likes foggy, cool areas with extremely high humidity, usually frost hardy; extremely wind resistant, sensitive to urban pollution.

Soil

Fresh to moist, very acidic to neutral, all well drained substrates, also possible on loam
